The purpose of this executive order is to improve comprehensively the visual presentation and usability of federal services with respect to digital and physical spaces. The order establishes an America by Design initiative and the National Design Studio (NDS). The order creates a position within the NDS titled Chief Design Officer who is charged with consulting with the heads of federal agencies to prioritize the improvement of websites and physical sites that have a major impact on American’s daily lives. The Chief Design Officer is also given the responsibility for consulting with thought leaders and research and design firms on how to best implement the American by Design initiative and with recruiting designers and other experts from the private sector.
